Kentucky’s natural landscape is filled with ideal places to relax, wander and reflect. There are also spots that seem to magically appear and have been created for that exact escape you are seeking. At the Yuko-En on the Elkhorn Japanese Garden in Georgetown, you will feel as if you’ve ventured across the world to a magical garden, when in fact you are still walking the gentle hills of Kentucky.
Situated along the North Elkhorn Creek, Yuko-En Japanese Garden is 5 1/2 acres of natural serenity. The garden was founded in partnership with Georgetown's Sister City, Tahara, Japan and is sustained today by volunteers and donations.
The garden features Bluegrass landscaping, within a Japanese-style stroll garden. After entering through the Tokugawa gate, you'll wander along a winding path that takes you through the garden. The lush green landscape is highlighted by the brightly colored bridge and flowering plants.
The main feature of the garden is the Koi pond. Currently, the garden and those who support it, are striving to restore the pond and provide the necessary maintenance. Never the less, it is still a lovely spot to relax.
Parts of the garden, as well as the onsite villa, are available for rental and would make a lovely venue for an event. You can find a brochure for a self-guided tour on their website, or you can choose to roam the garden and see what you can discover.
The garden is beautiful all four seasons and is meant to be enjoyed year round. Because it is meant to be a quiet, peaceful place, it's important to remember to be respectful of the structures, other visitors and the garden itself.
According to their website, Yuko-En's mission is, "To enhance community, international friendship, the appreciation for nature, and the promotion of life long learning." This Japanese-style garden is a wonderful way to venture to a faraway environment, while staying put in the Bluegrass State.
Yuko-En on the Elkhorn is open everyday from dawn until dusk. For more info on this magical oasis, visit their website here. The garden is located at 700 Cincinnati Pike Georgetown, KY 40324.
