If you’re from Detroit, you understand what makes the Motor City so special and unique. But it’s not just Detroiters who should appreciate the contributions and attractions of our amazing city — and we can prove it! Here are eleven reasons why everyone should love Detroit.
1. If you love art, you’ll find it here.
Detroit might not be your first thought when it comes to fine art, but we’ve got all sorts of creative works to explore. Head to the Detroit Institute of Arts to peruse hundreds of works, ranging from the classical to the modern. You’ll even find a fascinating mural by painter Diego Rivera. What’s not to love?
2. Music is also one of our strong suits.
If you love Motown, you should know that its home is in Detroit. From Stevie Wonder to Diana Ross, all sorts of iconic musicians got their start here in the Motor City. We’re also home to artists like Eminem, the late and great Aaliyah, and countless others.
3. Our sporting events are ridiculously fun.
Every city boasts about their sports teams, but Detroit sports take fun and togetherness to a whole new level. Where else can you watch an octopus being tossed onto the ice rink before an NHL game? On a warm summer afternoon, a Tigers game is just what the doctor ordered, and there’s even something special about watching the Lions give their all at Ford Field.
4. We’re just minutes away from Canada.
Those who aren’t familiar with Detroit might not realize just how close our city is to the Canadian border. If you’ve ever wanted to live right on the edge of another country, Detroit is the spot for you! We can make quick day trips over to lovely Windsor, and the Ambassador Bridge in itself is a manmade marvel.
5. You’ll find no shortage of outdoor space.
From the Dequindre Cut to Belle Isle, there’s no need to worry about finding places to escape from the hustle and bustle of life in Detroit. Grab your bike or take a walk through Milliken State Park, pack a picnic lunch for a day on the Riverfront, or lounge in Campus Martius Park. It’s easy to relax in our city.
6. Belle Isle is a one-of-a-kind gem.
Speaking of outdoor space, Belle Isle is a major attraction in Detroit that simply can’t be overlooked. This beautiful island park features a stunning conservancy, a historic aquarium, and breathtaking views of the city skyline. You’ll feel as though you’ve stepped into a whole new world when you journey to Belle Isle — but you’re still right here in the Motor City!
7. Diversity is a point of pride for Detroiters.
From our large African-American population to the welcoming streets of Mexicantown, Detroit is home to all sorts of unique and wonderful people. We embrace this diversity and choose to learn from each other instead of creating divisions — and that’s a beautiful thing.
8. Did we mention the delicious food?
Speaking of Mexicantown, Detroit offers some of the greatest Mexican food around. You’ll also go crazy for coney dogs, which originated right here in the Motor City. Of course, no trip to Detroit is complete without a piece of Detroit-style pizza or a visit to Slows for amazing BBQ. Trust us on this one: your tastebuds will thank you.
9. The Detroit River is a gorgeous place to explore.
While Detroit isn’t far from Michigan’s Great Lakes, it has its own beautiful body of water to appreciate. The Detroit River is a wonderful spot to take a walk, check out boats, or even try your hand at a bit of fishing. When you’re stressed out in Detroit, nothing calms the body and mind like a stroll along the waterfront.
10. We’re responsible for some of your favorite cars.
They don’t call us the Motor City for nothing. If you’ve ever owned and loved a Ford, GM, or Chrysler, chances are good that you can thank Detroit for our contributions. Among other auto organizations, the "Big Three" have played a long and complex role in the history of Detroit — and we’re proud of our part in advancing America’s technological achievements.
11. Detroiters never give up.
It’s no secret that Detroit has faced more than its fair share of struggles and conflicts throughout the years. We’ve dealt with it all: violence, corruption, bankruptcy… the list continues. But those of us who call Detroit home refuse to give up on the potential of the Motor City to rise from the ashes and continue rebuilding. Visit our city and you’ll see for yourself: we’re a town on the mend.
Tell us, Detroiters: why should everyone love the Motor City? We’re always eager to hear from you, so share your thoughts and ideas in the comment section below.
