What makes a ‘North Carolinian?’ While you can move here and seem to fit right into the culture, there’s just something about growing up here that shapes you into a certain type of person. Whether or not you were ‘Tar Heel born and Tar Heel bred,’ these 15 things define growing up in the Ol’ North State.
1. After a long night out on the town...you're always craving Cookout.
Bonus points if you felt a little salty when they expanded locations into SC/GA.
2. And the next morning (or any morning really) all you can think about is Bojangles.
3. You know random tidbits about gardening/farming/agriculture...mainly learned from grandparents or parents. Everyone in North Carolina has some kind of distant farm connection.
4. Some of us even took that passion a bit further receiving a degree in AG from NC State.
5. But if you grew up where there was more water than land...you're probably a prime angler by this time.
6. You've gotten stuck behind a 'tractor traffic jam' on the road. If you grew up in the country, it doesn't even faze you anymore.
7. No summer is complete without a weeklong trip to the beach. You probably still go to the same beach your parents took you to as a child too.
8. You grew up with your fair share of snow days but still participate in the madness that is pre-prep when more than three inches is predicted.
9. You know BBQ means barbecue, cookout means grilling out with friends (usually burgers and hot dogs) and pig pickin' is roasting a 'whole hog.'
10. Speaking of, you'll defend your 'regional' BBQ style of choice to the death. While you might know some of the best places to grab the Q, you're also picky about who you share this sacred knowledge with.
11. Between skiing, snowboarding and surfing, you've tried at least one of these activities. Extra points if you've grabbed your board and headed to the coast during a massive hurricane or braved snowy roads for 'fresh powder.'
12. Ma'am, sir, y'all, ain't - are all actual words and don't let anyone tell you differently.
13. You feel half in shock, half excited, and half skeptical about how our cities have grown and exploded into major 'hip' metropolitan places over the past ten years. You also say things like, "No one used to go Downtown."
14. You're a secret 'leafer,' you've also driven on the Blue Ridge Parkway more times than you care to admit.
15. No matter how far you travel or where you go, North Carolina will always be home.
What do you think? What would you add?
Speaking of North Carolina, these ten summer mountain activities are a must.
