Though we may be home to one of the largest, busiest cities in the United States, there’s nothing Illinoisians love more than some peace and quiet. Though there are a wealth of charming towns throughout the state, Southern Illinois is where you’ll find one of the best.
Whether you love chillaxing by the water or getting in a few holes to recoup from the week, you’ll find calmness and tranquility in this lovable town.
Marion is a favorite Southern Illlinois getaway situated just north of the Shawnee National Forest in Williamson County where there are still many woods and creeks.
But Marion has much more to offer. This medium sized town is home to just over 17,000 people, but most residents don't just stick to the square. There are other peaceful havens to visit.
If your idea of tranquility is being surrounded by beauty, Marion's Mandala Gardens are the place to be. Step through Alvin's Moongate and Infinity Arch into a majestic landscape of color and nature that excite your senses but calm your spirit.
True nature lovers will find themselves at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge where, in addition to native trees and flowers, you'll happen upon birds, deer, and any number of other critters that will have you feeling like Snow White in no time.
