When E. I. du Pont founded the DuPont Company in 1802, I wonder if he knew that his gunpowder mill at Hagley would transform an entire region. As the du Ponts became more and more successful, their influence spread out to the Brandywine Valley, and Delaware’s Chateau Country began to emerge. Many mansions were created with French influence, gardens were established throughout New Castle County, and wineries began to pop up, taking advantage of Delaware’s sandy soil. Now, decades later, Delaware’s Chateau Country remains a French-inspired escape from the busier regions of the First State.
