1. Arab and Chaldean Festival (July 29 and 30, Detroit)
This awesome event at Hart Plaza offers visitors a firsthand look at all sorts of fascinating Arab traditions, dishes, and works of art. Learn about the history of Yemen, enjoy a presentation on Arab medicine, and pick up some new Arab calligraphy skills. Talk about a unique celebration.
2. African World Festival (August 18-20, Detroit)
Sponsored by the Wright Museum of African-American History, this wonderful festival is now in its 35th year. Admission is free, and there’s something here for the whole family. From poetry to delicious cuisine to African drumming presentations, there’s no telling what you’ll discover at the African World Festival.
3. St. Joseph Oktoberfest (Dates unconfirmed, Detroit)
Celebrate all things German with this annual celebration, which takes place at Detroit’s St. Joseph Catholic Church! Did you ever think you’d drink a beer or two at church? During this fun festival, you’ll sample German cuisine, listen to some awesome German tunes (live onstage!), and mingle with neighbors. What’s not to love?
4. Caribbean Cultural Festival (August 11-13, Detroit)
This annual three-day event celebrates all things Caribbean, and you’re in for a rich experience as soon as you arrive. This year, the featured countries are Dominica and Antigua — prepare to indulge in traditional food, try your hand at a few dance moves, and enjoy the sounds of live music. You’ll feel as though you’ve been transported to a sunny Caribbean locale.
5. American Polish Festival & Craft Show (July 7-9, Sterling Heights)
Venture to Sterling Heights and immerse yourself in Polish culture for a few hours at this one-of-a-kind gathering. Take part in a pierogi-eating contest, enjoy traditional Polish dance performances, and pick up a few homemade goods at the Polish craft show. No matter how many times you've attended, the Polish Festival never seems to lose its charm.
6. Detroit Greek Independence Day Parade (March 2018, Detroit)
While the 2017 Detroit Greek Independence Day celebration has already passed, it’s never too early to start planning for next year! Check out this incredible parade, which features all sorts of floats and groups paying homage to Greek culture. 7. Brazilian Day Street Festival (September 16, Detroit
Check out this fist-time Motor City event, which celebrates Brazilian Independence Day! The mission of the festival is to promote unity, peace, and cross-cultural understanding. What better way to accomplish that mission than to share all sorts of mouthwatering Brazilian dishes while enjoying a variety of traditional musical performances? 8. Kinfolks Soul Food Festival (August 6 and 7, Detroit)
Head to Hart Plaza for a unique weekend full of music and — you guessed it — mouthwatering soul food. Celebrate African-American culture alongside family and friends as you dine on hearty meals from local vendors and sing along to everything from oldies to contemporary. It’s nearly impossible to have a bad time at this upbeat celebration!
9. Motor City Irish Fest (June 16-18, Livonia)
You don’t have to wait for St. Patrick’s Day to embrace all things Irish. This fantastic festival, which will premiere its new Livonia location this year, offers all sorts of opportunities to learn about Irish heritage and have fun while doing it! Irish dancers, whiskey tasting, and a tea house are just a few of the great events you’ll find at the 2017 Motor City Irish Fest.
