Americans are obsessed with making sure victims get justice, and when they don’t, it really bothers us. I think it’s why we become so involved in trying to solve unsolved mysteries. Wisconsin has its fair share. Here are seven of the most famous:
1. Amber Wilde
Amber Wilde was a 19 year old student at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay when she went missing. Her car was discovered at a bar (with her keys and cell phone locked inside the trunk) near Lambeau Field but she has not been seen since 1998. Wilde was a few months pregnant when she disappeared on September 23, 1998. Earlier that day, she had been in a minor car accident. The father of her child has always been a suspect, and in late 2014, some rural property was searched. It is unclear what was searched for or found.
2. Laurie Depies
It was 1992, and Depies had just finished work at the Fox River Mall in Appleton. She was headed to her boyfriend's house and would never be seen again. The boyfriend is not a suspect. The case seemed to be cracked when in 2011, Larry DeWayne Hall confessed to killing and burying Depies. However, authorities were unable to find remains in the place Hall said he buried Depies.
3. Barbara Blackstone
The year was 1987, and Blackstone went to a gas station in Lyndon Station (pictured above) to fill up a container of gas for her tractor and get gas for her car. It would be the last purchase she would make. Blackstone then returned home, where her husband discovered her car with the keys in it. There was no sign of Barbara or any note. About a month later, Blackstone's remains were found about 75 miles away. The case was re-opened in 2009, but there were no leads.
4. Donna Mraz
Little is known about the murder of Donna Mraz, who was a college student at the University of Wisconsin in 1982. Mraz was fatally stabbed right outside of Camp Randall Stadium. She was only 23 at the time when a killer stabbed her repeatedly. There are no leads.
5. Traci Hammerberg
Hammerberg was sexually assaulted and brutally murdered thirty years ago. Her body was discovered in Grafton. Many people have been questioned and had their DNA tested, but there has been no luck with this case.
6. Barbara Davis
Davis was only seventeen years old in 1980. Her body would be found in an alley in Milwaukee, severely beaten. Now, 35 years later, the case has still not been solved. The last time she was seen, she was leaving a nightclub around 10 P.M. No credible leads have ever been generated.
7. Derby Wagner-Richardson
Derby was a security guard who worked the night shift. She always checked in before she left but one evening, her call never came in. Later, police discovered her body in the trunk of her car. Her estranged husband was always a person of interest, but no arrests have been made.
You never know who has the key to crack the case. Please share, and hopefully we can get some justice for these people!
