While Missourians have plenty of things in common, we also have a lot that we just can’t seem to ever agree on. From baseball to the best barbecue, here are 11 things that often spark debate among locals.
1. Baseball: Kansas City Royals or the St. Louis Cardinals?
You either love the Kansas City Royals or you're a die hard Cardinals fan. Rarely will you find someone who is a fan of both.
2. Barbecue: Missouri vs. Missouri
If we only pitted popular Kansas City BBQ spots against each other, we'd be leaving out Pappy's in St. Louis, Danna's in Branson and Shotgun Pete's in Columbia. There's just so much amazing BBQ in Missouri, that it's impossible to unanimously decide on one spot as the absolute best.
3. State pronunciation: Missour-ee or Missour-uh?
Some say, "Missour-ee while others say, "Missour-uh" So, which one is right?
4. Jesse James: Criminal or American Hero?
Jesse James is notoriously known as one America's most troublesome bandits. However, some people in Missouri praise James for rebelling against the Union.
5. Wineries: Augusta vs. Ste. Genevieve vs. Hermann.
Missouri is home to some pretty incredible wineries, but the bulk of our fantastic wineries can be found in Augusta, Ste. Genevieve and Hermann. To only visit one of them would be a crime, so I suggest dedicating a weekend to each city and its wine region.
6. Best floating method: Inflatable raft, canoe or kayak
When it comes to taking a float trip, there are various vessels one can take. Which one do you think is the most efficient for a relaxing day on the river?
7. Provel cheese: Delicious or disgusting?
Provel cheese is a processed blend of cheddar, Swiss and provolone. It's most popular in St. Louis and is often used with pizzas at Imo's. Some people love it, while others find it to be gross.
8. Carbonated beverage: Pop vs. soda
Since moving to Missouri, I've heard a mix of both, but personally, I call it, "pop." How about you?
9. Way of life: Country vs. city
Missouri has two major cities with a few college towns and mid-sized cities sprinkled throughout the state. Beyond that, miles and miles of open green space. Some prefer the quieter, country life. while others flock to the city for a more fast-paced way of life.
10. Higher education: Public vs. private
We have some pretty incredible state schools including the University of Missouri and Truman State University. However, some choose to go with the smaller private colleges and universities such as Washington University, St. Louis University and College of the Ozarks.
11. Hometown brewery: Budweiser vs. Boulevard
When it comes to local suds, Budweiser has the most popularity globally. However, many Missourians stay loyal to any craft beer brewed by Boulevard Brewing Company in Kansas City. So, which one is your favorite?
