In New York, we’re spoiled to have a handful of fantastic cities that have become well-known for their savory dishes and out of this world restaurants. But if you’re looking to dive into our regional history a bit more and find out what has long been filling the bellies of our amazing residents, then you’re going to need to start crossing off these dishes from your dining bucket list ASAP.
1. Garbage Plate - Rochester
A dish that can often come across a bit overwhelming to our out-of-town visitors, the Garbage Plate is quite literally a mini mountain made up of heavenly flavors. A Rochester native dish, the Garbage Plate is unique in that everyone is able to customize their meal. Traditionally you'll find that the plate is made up of hamburger, chicken, sausages, eggs, grilled cheese, home fries, macaroni salad and so much more. The idea of this dish came about in the early 1900s during the Depression when everyone was trying to get more bang for their buck and has since been a local favorite.

2. Beef on Weck - Buffalo
A favorite that you'll find served all over Western New York, Beef on Weck is the meat sandwich you never knew you needed. Perfectly resting between kummelweck roll, the sandwich is simply made up of roast beef. While it will forever be an ongoing debate as to who serves up the best Beef on Weck, you can always count on either Charlie The Butcher or Schwabi's to provide you with a great tasting dish.

3. Michigans - Plattsburgh
When it comes to figuring out where the best tasting Michigans' originated from, it's another food topic that is frequently debated. Several regions of New York make an effort to claim this dish as theirs. But if you're looking to
really experience a great tasting Michigan? It's not even a question that you'll want to head up north to Plattsburgh to visit either Gus' Red Hots or Clare & Carl's Hot Dog Stand. A steamed hot dog that you'll find topped in meat sauce, onions and usually mustard, this is just one of the many ways New York shows off how much we love hot dogs!

4. Spiedies - Binghamton
A delicious gift to the Southern Tier, the Spiedie is one of our most tasty sandwiches. Usually made up of cubes of chicken that are covered in a scrumptious marinade, the dish can also feature other meats like pork, beef or veal. While this particular dish may have originated in the wonderful Binghamton area, you'll now find that locations throughout Central New York that have put their own take on the Spiedie.

5. Wings - Buffalo
When it comes to dishes that our state is famous for, Wings are one of the most popular, to say the least. All over the Empire State you can find restaurants serving up unbelievable wings that will send your taste buds through the roof, but you won't find any flavors like the ones that are waiting for you out in Buffalo. All over our great city you can find long-standing establishments that have mastered how to create the perfect wing, we're spoiled!

6. Lobster Roll - Long Island
Sure some people may associate lobster rolls with the great state of Maine, but our residents out on Long Island know that some of the most unbelievable lobster dishes can be found out here in this region of New York. There are a ton of fantastic restaurants
along the coast where you can get great lobster rolls, but the one iconic restaurant that you'll want to visit for this dish is the Lobster Roll in Amagansett. Yes, quite simply named after the dish itself, this location is one that's more than worthy of your dining bucket list.

7. Cold Cheese Pizza - Oneonta
Of course you're familiar with our famous New York-style pizza, but what about our Cold Cheese Pizza? But it's the underrated city of Oneonta that has the best cold cheese pizza you've always dreamed of tasting. The simplicity of the dish is one that tends to shock people, but one that never fails to disappoint. A warm cheese pizza topped with cold, shredded mozzarella will instantly become your new favorite late-night dish.

8. Chicken Riggies - Utica
If you haven't already figured out that Utica is one of our greatest foodie cities that's worth visiting, let us remind you once again with one of our favorite dishes. It wasn't too long ago that we listed off some of New York's
best places to get Chicken Riggies , many of which can be found right in Utica. Made up of rigatoni, chicken cubes and a special sauce that will drop your jaw, this pasta dish is certainly one for the books.

9. White Hots - Syracuse
For the sake of naming a location, we'll list Syracuse, but our longtime residents know that White Hots can be found all over Central and Western New York. A pork hot dog that you'll usually find topped off with plenty of mustard and spices, White Hots are just another example of how our state loves hot dogs and creating different ways to enjoy them.

10. New York Pizza - New York City
A large part of me simply wants to fill this description with the words "mic drop", but instead I'll take this as an opportunity to brag about how New York has the best pizza
ever . If you find yourself disagreeing with this statement, then you may want to go ahead and book yourself a doctors appointment because you clearly aren't feeling well. While all of New York, mainly the Big Apple, is associated with the greatest tasting pizza, some of our residents may not know that our country's very first pizzeria can be found in our state! If you've never been, you might want to make a point to visit the historic Lombardi's Pizza in New York.

11. Utica Greens - Utica
One of the best parts about finding which restaurants in the city serve up the best Utica Greens is that these locations almost always also feature Chicken Riggies on their menu as well! If you aren't familiar with this incredible dish, Utica Greens consists of sautéed greens, escarole, breadcrumbs, cheese and usually a few other components that will wake up your taste buds! Most of us have our favorite dining establishment to go to for this dish, but the majority of us have mastered how to make it on our own at home and prefer our special touch.
