Folklore has it that during the colonial era, a group of settlers executed several Wampanoag native people on the what is now Wolf Island Road. The ghosts of these hanged prisoners are said to still hang from the branches of the trees lining the road.
The spectral forms are supposed to be visible on the anniversary of their deaths sometime during the middle of the summer. Some have glimpsed the eyes of dead men peering out from the branches where they swing.
