Journey just about anywhere in Pittsburgh and you’re likely to hear a haunted tale or two. Pittsburgh’s known for its haunted history but if you want to experience a truly bone chilling experience, travel just about two hours from downtown to Altoona. And, wear your hiking boots because you’re about to embark on the best haunted hike near Pittsburgh.
An unassuming yet treacherous road in Altoona – Beulah Road, to be exact – travels up Wopsononock Mountain where The Wopsononock Hotel, a popular resting spot for travelers, once stood.
Lace up your more comfortable shoes for your trek up the mountain and be on the lookout, for you may run into the spirit of a distraught woman desperately searching for her beloved husband.
Many decades ago, a groom and his bride are said to have rushed up the mountain, heading to the Wopsononock Hotel to celebrate their new marriage. Unfortunately, their happy day was marred by the bride’s father, who vehemently opposed the union.
As the two fled up the hill and away from her father, the carriage in which they were riding came to a dangerous curve, now known as Devil’s Elbow, and toppled over the side of the mountain.
Ever since that tragic night, travelers trekking up the side of the mountain tell of seeing the apparition of a distraught bride carrying a lantern and desperately searching for her husband. Some even say that the woman stops cars just to see if her husband is inside.
Still others – typically young men – claim to have picked up a woman hitchhiking up the side of the mountain. These young men describe being unable to see the woman in white in the rear-view mirror even though they could see her when they turned and looked in the backseat.
Devil’s Elbow has become the sight of numerous automobile accidents over the years, especially when an inexperienced driver is behind the wheel, so take precautions if you decide to drive rather than hike up the mountain.
Enjoy the fresh air – and perhaps a side of the paranormal – when you embark on the best haunted hike near Pittsburgh. Then, hit the road on this haunted road trip near Pittsburgh if you dare.
