Living in the Motor City is wonderful and unique, but sometimes life pulls us in other directions. While it’s exciting to explore a new city, state, or country, there’s truly no place in the world quite like Detroit. If you’ve had to move away from your beloved Motor City hometown, there are a few thoughts you’ve likely had.
1. You call this cold?
We get it: other cities have cold winters. Some, like Chicago, can even claim their titles as the windiest in the country. But once you leave Detroit, you’ll quickly realize that there’s truth to the old saying: "It’s so cold in the D." And you might be shocked when your new city panics over a slight temperature drop.
2. So THIS is what it’s like to have a winning football team.
Don’t get us wrong, we love our Detroit Lions. But once you move to a city whose football team has actually played in a Super Bowl or two, you’ll start to realize that there’s a special sort of hometown pride that surrounds a successful NFL team. It’s a feeling most Detroiters have never experienced!
3. What do I have to do to get a good coney dog around here?
Sure, there are imitation coney island restaurants all around the world. But a move away from Detroit will leave you craving the original. You might just have to grab several dozen coney dogs on your next trip to Detroit and store them up for later. Nothing beats the real thing, no matter how hard you search.
4. Or, for that matter, a quick bottle of Vernor’s?
When you find yourself feeling a little sick, a bottle of Vernor’s does the trick. The downside of moving away from Detroit (or Michigan in general) is that your favorite fizzy drink becomes a little harder to track down. You might even have to resort to taking — brace yourself — real nausea medicine.
5. You REALLY think your city has more heart than Detroit?
It’s not a competition, but Detroit would definitely take the top spot for "strongest spirit." Our city has gone through a lot and we’re fiercely proud of the progress we’ve made. Moving to a new place only enhances our Motor City pride and strength. Just don’t try to tell us that your city is more resilient than ours.
6. What’s this "soda" you speak of?
No matter how many times we hear the alternative name or how long we’ve lived away from Detroit, it will always be "pop" to us. End of story.
7. Where’s all the good music?
Nashville has country, New Orleans has jazz, but Detroit has the best of the best: Motown. When you grow up in the Motor City and move away, you’ll find yourself longing for the sounds of home. Thank goodness for modern technology that allows us to enjoy our favorite tunes wherever we roam!
8. I could really use a relaxing walk along the river.
There’s something wonderful about walking along the Detroit River. This beautiful walkway in our city fills us with pride and comfort no matter how many times we visit, and it’s something that’s certainly missed by former Detroiters. You can find a replacement river to tide you over, but it will never be quite the same.
9. It’s HOW far from here to Canada?!
What?! You’re telling me that it will require four hours on an airplane to reach Canada? But… I’m from Detroit! We can cross the border into Canada in just a few minutes. After leaving Detroit, it’s tough to adjust to the newfound distance between us and our favorite northern neighbors.
10. Eat ‘em up, Tigers!
No matter where we relocate to, we’ll always be Tigers fans through and through. When we hear our new friends rooting for their teams, we simply won’t be able to resist cheering (internally and externally) for our beloved Detroit Tigers. Eat 'em up!
11. I miss the Motor City.
It’s simple: there’s no place like home. And Detroit will always be ours.
