In Nebraska, we’re no stranger to unusual and bizarre events. While some people may have their minds on other matters, our residents and government officials are simply trying to work toward designing a new state flag that isn’t so unrecognizable that it manages to get flown upside down for ten days straight. Yes, ten days . Haven’t heard about this mix up yet? Then let us fill you in.
High above the west side of the State Capitol, Nebraska's flag was flown upside down for 10 days.
After
Omaha World-Herald covered the story of our state flag being flown upside down, a user on
reddit brought the error to the Internet's attention. Quickly the post on reddit gained attention with thousands of comments pouring in. Many were baffled that the flag managed to remain upside down for so long.
It wasn't until someone brought the error to State Senator Burke Harr's attention that the flag was changed back.
The Senator used the opportunity to point out that it might finally be time for Nebraska to consider redesigning their state flag. Harry has proposed that a task force be put together to determine whether or not the flag should be redesigned. The proposal suggests that the task force be made up of five members, all of whom would be Senators - one from each congressional district and two at-large members.
Officials have pointed out that the flag doesn't stand out, which is how it was flown upside down for so long before anyone noticed.
Currently the flag is blue and gold, featuring the state seal. Many have also pointed out that Nebraska's flag is similar to other flags that are blue with state seals. Reportedly, other states like Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin are also considering changing their flags.
This isn't the first time people have wanted to redesign Nebraska's flag. Back in 2002 attempts were made to change the design but never happened.
While some began to work toward redesigning the state flag, others felt that it was a blow to Nebraska's history. Eventually the backlash was too much and plans to change the flag's look were brought to a halt. While many believe the flag simply doesn't stand out enough and isn't recognizable, others want a change because they believe the flag's design no longer represents what our state stands for.
Executive Director of the Nebraska Art Council Suzanne Wise has also stated how important and beneficial a state's flag can be, with other states having professional sports teams that incorporate their flag into their design. Wise also pointed out that states with poorly-designed flags are flown far less than states that have better flags.
So, what do you think? Is it time for Nebraska to design a new state flag? Be sure to tell us your opinions in the comments section!
