There’s a place in Iowa that feels like the ruins of an ancient civilization: The Shrine of the Grotto of Redemption in West Bend, Iowa. It consists of nine collective grottos depicting the life of Jesus Christ and is the largest man-made grotto in the world. The Grotto of Redemption contains over $4 million in minerals, and is visited by over 100,000 people annually.

Just driving through Iowa, you’ll see acres and acres of thriving, beautiful farmland. In fact, Iowa is probably best known throughout the world for its farming industry. One of the most famous dairy farms in the world is actually located right here in Iowa, and they’re the makers of the incredibly delicious Maytag blue cheese. 10. Fenelon Place Elevator
The Fenelon Place Elevator, also known as the Fourth Street Elevator, is one of the most interesting and breathtaking attractions in Iowa. This small railway car (it’s only about 3 ft.) is located in Iowa’s oldest city, Dubuque. This elevator claims to be the shortest and steepest railroad in the world (although there are several others who also make this claim). It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and is definitely worth the trip to Dubuque.
