Delaware is a quirky state with a lot of unique traits, and sometimes that’s hard for Delaware visitors to understand! So we figured we needed a quick guide, sort of like a Delaware FAQ, for anyone visiting from out of state. Those of you who’ve hosted out of towners will understand all of these are things that we have to explain to Delaware visitors again and again.
You know, for being the First State, we're not really that well known. That's okay, it keeps our state calm and quiet, but it also leads to having to explain the state and its location, and defending its existence.
Maryland is known around the country for their amazing crabcakes, but did you know Delaware's can be just as good? And Delaware Bay oysters are world-famous for their flavor.

The relaxed, rural way of life below the canal is just something you have to accept. Nobody's going to rush for you. Side note: There's always such a divide in the comments on these issues, but I'll take a stand here. It's "Slower Lower," not "LSD," and it starts at the Canal.

Yeah, if you choose to visit in the middle of summer, be prepared to have traffic backed up and congestion prevalent even if you don't think you're that close to the beaches. In a state this small, everything is close to everything.
Trolley Square, the Riverwalk and Rodney Square are three of the coolest spots in the entire state. When you consider all of the DuPont estates on the outskirts of the city, Alapocas Run State Park and Brandywine Park, there's so much in Wilmington that just gets overlooked. The city is actually awesome.
Delaware's a huge poultry state, and chicken and dumplings here are the best you'll ever have. Just don't expect round dumplings - those are the worst. Slippery dumplings are the only way to eat this classic Delmarva dish.

Something about all the fried and sweet food mixed with nostalgia makes Delaware boardwalk food such a treat... no wonder out-of-towners don't quite get it.
Delaware is SUCH a foodie state, and we really get to know everyone at our favorite local spots. That's one reason why Delaware hole in the wall restaurants are so prevalent and incredible.
They built the largest industries in the state, established gigantic mansions and gardens, dedicated museums and founded one of the best Children's hospitals in the country. So yeah, you're going to see a lot of things named after them. Don't mix up all the roads named DuPont Highway, DuPont Ave, and DuPont Rd.
