It was built in the mid 19th-century, beginning in 1847 and finishing in 1852.
The building is known by many as the Louisiana Castle and/or the Castle on the River.

It was designed by New York architect James H. Dakin, who created a Neo-Gothic medieval-style castle. He called the style "Castellated Gothic", referring directly to the large amount of cast iron that was used to create the structure.
Not only is the exterior of this building incredible, the interior will equally take your breath away.

There is also a four dimensional theater production that takes place in the museum called "The Ghost of the Castle".
