This trail is awesome year-round, but in winter, it takes on special magic with incredible views of the Missouri River covered in snow and ice. Other favorite trails for cold weather hiking in Nebraska include Lake McConnaughy in Oglala, which is home to an amazing frozen shoreline and some of the best birdwatching in the state, and Chadron State Park is a must-do year round but especially when it’s cold out. Winters in Nebraska can be, honestly, pretty brutal. The average low temperature here during the winter months is well below freezing at only about 10 degrees, and the highs usually aren’t a lot more than that, at around 20 degrees during the day. It’s not at all uncommon for temperatures to plunge below zero at times, and intense snow and ice storms have been known to happen. Annual snowfall ranges from about 21 inches in the southern parts of the state to 45 inches in the northernmost bits, and snow days are definitely not unheard of around here.
