Winter Storm Warning In Effect For Hawaii, Two Feet Of Snow Possible In Some Areas
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for parts of Hawaii and says an additional two feet of accumulated snow is possible in some areas.
The warning, which is in effect through Saturday evening local time, is for the Big Island’s volcanic peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa and the accumulation is expected in areas with an elevation of 11,000 feet or higher. The winter weather warning will drop down to a watch on Sunday.
In response, officials have closed down part of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, including the summit of Mauna Loa as well as the road to Mauna Kea due to dangerous conditions like ice and fog. As fresh coats of snow were falling over the last couple of days, the Office of Maunakea Management managed to get a few shots of the snowy scene:
While snow in these parts of Hawaii are by no means uncommon, usually snowfall is seen just at the volcanic summits. “It snows here every year, but only at the very summits of our three tallest volcanoes,” a University of Hawaii professor told weather.com. Here’s what the Mauna Kea summit typically looks like:
Pretty surreal, right? Have you ever visited Mauna Kea or Mauna Loa? What was your experience like when you were there?
