Living in one of the top 5 most populated states in the US means that few remote places remain. While we do have several gorgeous parks, it’s difficult to find isolated sites where we Rhode Islanders can be truly alone with our thoughts. Lucky for us, there is one extremely remote place in Rhode Island that is as gorgeous as it is secluded. If you’re going to be in the state for a while, you’ll definitely want to know where to find this breathtaking site.
While more than 30 islands can be found in Narragansett Bay off the coast of Rhode Island, one Island stands out amongst the others as one of the most beautiful remote places.
Prudence Island is the third largest island in the bay and is part of the town of Portsmouth.
Though most of Portsmouth is located on Aquidneck Island neighboring Middletown and Newport, Prudence Island stands disconnected in the bay with far less attractions than the rest of the town.
The main way to get access to the island is the Prudence and Bay Islands transport which departs from Bristol. The ferry has limited capacity, but offers a lovely quick ride to Prudence Island.
During WWII, Prudence Island was temporarily used by the US Navy as an ammunition depot and several military structures remain.
The island also has historically significant ties to the founder of Rhode Island, Roger Williams, who greeted Native Americans on the land.
Other offerings include gorgeous nature trails, a historic lighthouse, and breathtaking views of the Atlantic.
