There’s nothing quite like discovering a new town in New York, especially when there’s a charming Main Street filled with shops and places to eat that will keep you busy. With the holidays quickly approaching and lots of shopping to be done, taking a trip to one of these 11 towns might be the perfect thing to check off of your bucket list before the year is over!
1. Lake Placid
One of the best parts about taking a getaway to
Lake Placid is that everything you need is within walking distance when you're staying on Main Street. With views of Mirror Lake, you'll be able to explore all of the little shops and restaurants of this Adirondack town. From the vintage Palace Theatre where you'll be able to catch a movie to Big Mountain Deli where you can find sandwiches all named after our 46 High Peaks, this Main Street will certainly keep you busy and is definitely one of my favorites.
2. Cooperstown
With Cooperstown sitting on the southern end of Otsego Lake, this Main Street will win you over and surround you with wonderfully remote views. Most of the stores you'll find on the several blocks of this street are dedicated to baseball, but that isn't all you'll find here. With such a fun sports theme running throughout the town, baseball lovers will enjoy exploring the area. So, what places should you make a point to check out? Besides the obvious stop you'll make at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, you'll definitely want to dine at the Cooperstown Diner!
3. Geneseo
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the wonderful town of Geneseo is a refreshing place to visit. On Main Street you can stay at the Big Tree Inn, a longtime local favorite that also features a restaurant that will blow your taste buds away. Other things you can check out on the street are a variety of places to eat like Mama Mia's and EuroCafe Real Food & Deli!
4. Oneonta
It is impossible to leave the town of Oneonta hungry, especially after checking out all of the restaurants on Main Street. A small stretch of town that's packed with unbelievable flavors, you'll be able to dine at places like Tino's Pizza where you can get slices of some of the best cold cheese pizza you'll ever find in New York as well as dine at places like The Red Caboose Restaurant! This street is also known for coming to life during SUNY Oneonta's annual OH-fest, where you'll find live music, vendors and more.
5. Tannersville
Known for being New York's Painted Village In The Sky, everything you'll love about Tannersville can be found right on Main Street. With buildings painted in vibrant colors that feature whimsical details, all of the stores and restaurants you'll come across here have their own characteristics that will make you fall in love. 6. Woodstock
Woodstock is the perfect little town to take a day trip to, where you'll be able to walk through town and soak in all of the friendly faces and Catskill Mountains. Stretch your legs along Tinker Street and you can pop into shops The Golden Notebook or dine at one of the many scrumptious restaurants you'll discover. One of our favorites restaurants to stop into on Tinker Street is Oriole 9!
7. Lake George
While this may not be a lively place to check out during our off season, it's during our warmer months that this entire town is brought to life. Something many of us make an annual tradition out of, walking along Lake George's Canada Street could keep you occupied all day long. The stretch of road has all of the little shops where you'll be able to buy your Lake George knickknacks as well as plenty of places to eat and even several arcades and fun houses. Your options will feel endless once you decide to explore this area.
8. Ellicottville
A
fantastic town to explore during the Winter, on Washington Street in Ellicottville there's much to be seen in this small stretch of road. Please your sweet tooth with a trip to Watson's Chocolates where you can find New York specialities like Sponge Candy and chocolate Buffalo Wings. The chocolate slices of heaven that can be found in this chocolate store alone are worth exploring this one street.
9. New Paltz
Leading you down to the Wallkill River, this Main Street is one that's filled with a variety of restaurants that will all make your stomach rumble as soon as you walk through the door. From coffee shops and cafes to amazing restaurants like Main Street Bistro, you'll have a hard time not constantly stopping for food while you're out shopping.
10. Greenport
Bringing you way out onto Long Island, this
quiet fishing town features a Main Street that's perfect for those who want to get out and surround themselves views of the water. Walk along this road in town and you can find art galleries, a recreational center, vintage shops and boutiques and amazing restaurants. If you're unsure of where you should eat, try dining at places like 1943 Pizza Bar, Brix & Rye or even Bruce's Cafe & Cheese Emporium!
11. Cold Spring
In the village of Cold Spring along the Hudson River there's much to be enjoyed on Main Street. With just several blocks you'll be overwhelmed with the perfect amount of cafes and splendid shops. If you're looking for a Main Street that will have you walking away with your hands full of shopping bags, then this is one you should explore ASAP!
