This Chicopee restaurant takes all the charm and nostalgia of trains, eliminates the headache of travel, and injects a heaping helping of succulent food. Bernie’s Dining Depot operates out of an old passenger train coach, and it’s one of the most unique eateries in the state.
But be warned: this is one restaurant where the term “portion control” is not part of the vocabulary.
Bernie’s is a family-run and owned diner. It’s owned by Barbara Bernashe, who takes pride in serving old-fashioned meals in lavish quantities.
Barbara actually does a good deal of the cooking herself. It's not uncommon to find her strolling the aisle of the coach, chatting with customers.
The first thing you'll notice when you pull up is the unique dining room: an old passenger coach smushed up against a 1940s diner.
The vibe at Bernie's is comfortable, casual and homey. The food may be high-caliber, but there's nothing fancy about the attitude here.
The seats on the train are original, though they have been spruced up over the years.
Nothing about the couch's interior has really been changed since the train's traveling days. Guests who once traveled in old-fashioned train cars will feel like they're stepping into the past.
Everything at Bernie's is tasty, but the Phantom Gourmet ranks the prime rib here among the best.
As you'll see below, the portions here are insanely huge. But the prices aren't. You'll be hard-pressed to find anything on the menu that creeps past the $30 mark, and most items are priced much lower.
You should come hungry. The regular portions are usually more than enough to dinner and leftovers, but if you're really peckish...
Bernie's is one of those rare places that doesn't just opt for quantity over quality, but serves huge meals that actually taste like they were carefully and lovingly prepared.
...you should opt for the Conductor's Cut. Seriously, it's that big. And only costs $32. For real.
The Conductor's Cut is two ribs and at least four inches of prime rib, cooked on the bone. That's enough to feed a family, or one famished carnivore.
Bernie's is also known for their decadent seafood dishes, like this heart-stoppingly beautiful lobster macaroni and cheese.
They also have a fine selection of sandwiches, salads, soups, wraps and desserts. Don't miss their Reese's peanut butter pie, or the traditional grapenut pudding.
If the train car isn't to your liking (or it's just full of lucky diners), you can also chow down in the diner.
The atmosphere in both areas is really wonderful. This is definitely a place that would appeal to those looking for a retro experience, or perhaps to relive some happy dining memories from their youth.
You really can't get much cozier and quainter than Bernie's. If you love trains, great food and warm hospitality, this place is heaven.
