It’s certainly true that South Dakotans are generally law-abiding, honest people. But even though the items on this list are mostly no longer enforced, they’re still technically laws that we don’t usually follow. Some things aren’t completely random and do make a LITTLE sense, but many leave us scratching our heads. Here are 9 things in South Dakota that many people don’t realize are illegal.
1. In Deadwood, it's illegal to mix an alcoholic beverage with another without a permit.

But don’t worry, this won’t stop you from mixing all the beer you want!
2. You're breaking the law if you use a throwing star in Sisseton.
It’s unclear if there’s an exception for origami ones.
3. It’s illegal to disturb a mink den in South Dakota.
"Sir, we’re going to need you to slowly step away from those minks."
4. If you fall asleep in a cheese factory, you’re breaking the law.
I wonder if those who work in a cheese factory drink twice as much coffee out of fear.
5. It’s illegal for hunters to use a spotlight in South Dakota, unless they're hunting raccoons and need the light to keep track of their dog.
For the most part, if it’s too dark to see, then you best be going home.
6. It’s against the law to create static in Huron.
What this little boy is doing here? Unlawful.
7. It’s illegal to allow your dog to hunt big game, with the exception of mountain lions.
Apparently, this is a wild beast in particular that your boy can handle.
8. Every hotel room in South Dakota is required to have 2 twin beds that are at least 2 feet apart.
If you and your significant other engage in sexual relations in the space between the beds, you’re breaking the law.
9. Horses are not permitted to enter Fountain Inn unless they are wearing pants.
Well, I guess we shouldn’t give the horses special treatment.
