Everyone knows Louisiana is home to a few strange sights–but I didn’t expect this! From the somber historical marker of the Yellow Fever Epidemic in Shreveport to the smallest chapel in the world, there’s something for everyone on this list!
1) Art, 20 ft Dalmatian Sculpture, Shreveport
This solid white piece of fiberglass features light up dots that can be purchased and placed on the Dalmatian, allowing community members to interact with the art. It was built by Moonbot studios as a gift to the Shreveport Regional Arts Council.
2) House of Shards, Abita Mystery Museum, Abita
This is just one of the many strange attractions you can find in this tucked away museum on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain. Inside the house is an interesting collection of vintage bicycles.
3) Nicholas Cage Future Tomb, New Orleans
Of all the strange things Nicholas Cage has done, this might be one of the strangest. This is a picture of the tomb he has already built for himself, right in the heart of New Orleans in St. Louis Cemetery #1.
4) The Only International Boundary Marker in the USA, Logansport
Can you believe that it is between Louisiana and Texas? Back in 1840 when Texas was a country all its own, this granite marker was placed to designate the border between Louisiana and Texas.
5) Yellow Fever Mound, Shreveport
Found in Oakland Cemetery of Shreveport, this mass grave marks a dark time in Shreveport’s history, when nearly 17% of its citizens died from Yellow Fever.
6) Kenny Hill’s Garden of Salvation, Chauvin
This incredible example of ‘outsider’ art was built by the reclusive Kenny Hill on his small bayou property outside of Chauvin, LA. Almost all of the 100+ sculptures are religious in nature.
7) Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, Livingston, LA
A national facility designed to detect gravity waves, this location has a sister observatory in Hanford, Washington. Using laser interferometry, this observatory measures ripples in space-time caused by supernovae and black holes.
8) Madonna Chapel, Plaquemine
13 feet long and 10 feet wide, this chapel claims to be the smallest church in the world. It was built by Mr. Tony Gullo after his child survived an illness.
9) Empty Head of Blind Justice, Lafayette
This pair of sculptures depicting ‘blind justice’ outside of the Lafayette Courthouse have the unique feature of having no brains!
10) Giant Safety Pin, New Orleans
Built in 1999 by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, this safety pin can now be found in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden in New Orleans, LA.
