Although the area is idyllic in good weather, on November 30, 1954 it was the site of a terrifying plane crash.

Northeast Flight 792 left Laconia for a short flight for Berlin, but became lost in a winter storm. Visibility was extremely low, when all of a sudden the clouds cleared and the pilot was that the plane was headed for a head-on collision with a mountain.

He quickly pulled up, making the head-on crash into a belly landing. He also turned off the plane's electronics to prevent an explosion. Amazingly, the seven captain and crew survived the initial crash, but two people died during the night.
