In a world where big-name chain stores and online retailers (with fast and free shipping) are king, there is something left to be desired… but what? I’ll give you a hint: It’s the friendly and personal service – and company pride – that comes with shopping local! If you are ready to take your shopping experience to the next level, visit this historic and utterly fascinating Colorado general store:
Located in the ghost town of St. Elmo, the old St. Elmo General Store is one of the few remaining businesses in the historic town, and offers a wide variety of antiques, snack foods, and ATV and cabin rentals.
Founded in 1880, St. Elmo was at one time a thriving mining town that during its prime housed over 150 patented mine claims and nearly 2,000 residents.
Even after the mines ran dry, the town continued to remain somewhat prosperous thanks to the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad laying their line through the town, making the area an important hub for supplies.
Unfortunately, when the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad tracks were abandoned in 1922, so was the town; the last family left in 1958.
Sadly, many of the historic buildings (including the old town hall) burned down in 2002, but one of the spared structures was that of the old general store.
As per the store's website , "St. Elmo General Store offers a wide variety of antiques
and souvenirs. Our antique line covers everything from fine china to yard art. We offer the best variety in antiques as well as the best deals around. We also carry a full line of souvenirs and t-shirts. Ice cream, drinks and snacks are also available."
The St. Elmo General Store is open seven days a week from Mother's Day weekend through mid-October (weather pending).
A good rule of thumb: If the flag is out and waving, they are open!
