Step Inside This Forbidden, Decaying Hospital in Georgia

There are quite a few abandoned buildings in Georgia that are boarded up and shoo away any trespassers. However, when you visit these buildings, it’s hard not to imagine a thriving history, and how many Georgians passed the threshold at one point. It’s a shame that we are no longer able to visit and explore these forbidden places, yet we can still use our imaginations and virtually step inside to get a better look. Like with this one decaying hospital, which is considered to some as the most haunted place in Georgia…

What was once the biggest mental health institution in the world, now sits abandoned and decaying in Milledgeville, Georgia.

The original name for the hospital was pretty straight to the point: “Georgia State Lunatic, Idiot and Epileptic Asylum”.

At over 2,000 acres, the property now sits in silence, with few, including security, able to set foot on the grass.

However, it is said that those who entered Milledgeville, could still hear the echoes of mistreated patients throughout the hallways.

Over the years, thousands of Georgians were sent to Milledgeville, oftentimes with unspecified conditions.

Eventually the hospital grew so big and held so many patients, they outgrew their resources, and conditions soon became deplorable.

In the 1950s, it was said that the patients were running the hospital due to the lack of administration, with a patient to doctor ratio of 100:1.

The hospital shut down eventually, leaving behind boarded up brick buildings, and a charming pecan grove in its wake.

The unmarked cast-iron gravestones too, still remain at Cedar Lane Cemetery, honoring the 25,000 patients who are buried on the property.

Although parts of the hospital are still in use to this day as a learning hospital, the majority of the forbidden property remains in heartbreakingly beautiful decay.
