Eufaula, the largest city in Barbour County, was incorporated in 1857 and overlooks Lake Eufaula from a bluff. It's also one of the most charming towns in Alabama.
Shorter Mansion, built in 1884 by Eli Sims Shorter II and his wife, is one of the best-known structures in Eufaula. Today, this Classical Revival-style home is used as a historic house museum. Shorter Mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and it's located at 340 N Eufaula Avenue.
Kendall Manor was built in 1872 by James T. Kendall. In 1990, it was sold outside of the family and became a bed and breakfast. Today, it's a private residence. Kendall Manor is located at 534 W Broad Street.
The Drewry-Mitchell-Moorer House was built in 1867 for Dr. John Drewry. This historic house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The Drewry-Mitchell-Moorer House is located at 640 N Eufaula Avenue.
Fendall Hall was built by Edward Young around the year 1860. At the time, Mr. Young was one of Eufaula's leading citizens. Fendall Hall remained in the Young family for five generations, and today it's open to the public as a museum. Fendall Hall is located at 917 W Barbour Street.
The Tavern was built in 1836 and designed by Edward Williams. During the 1860s, it was used as a Confederate hospital. The Tavern was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, and it's located at 105 Riverside Drive.
The Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1964, covers more than 11,000 acres and receives more than 325,000 visitors each year. The main purpose of the Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge is to protect endangered and threatened species, including the bald eagle, peregrine falcon and American alligator. The Eufuala National Wildlife Refuge is located at 367 AL-165.
Lakepoint Resort State Park is situated along the banks of Lake Eufaula and offers a variety of activities, including hiking, swimming, fishing, boating, camping, picnicking and bird watching. Lakepoint Resort State Park is located at 104 Lakepoint Drive.
