The next time you’re in Auburn, Alabama and craving a delicious meal, be sure to stop by Amsterdam Cafe and give it a try. Amsterdam Cafe is just one of the many different types of restaurants in Auburn. Instead of serving college favorites such as burgers, hot wings and pizza, Amsterdam Cafe serves a variety of creative dishes that you won’t find anywhere else – especially in Auburn.
Amsterdam Cafe has come a really long way since it first began in the early 1990s. What was once just a popular hangout for college students, faculty members and town residents, is now a restaurant that people will drive hundreds of miles to eat at. The original owner’s primary reason for opening up Amsterdam Cafe was to showcase his handmade Shulbok tables. In 1998, new owners took over the restaurant and have continued to make changes to it. For example, they’ve changed up their menu options, in addition to renovating the building into a larger and more inviting space. While making these changes, they decided the Van Gough-inspired theme and artwork would remain.
Amsterdam Cafe’s walls are decorated with Van Gough-inspired paintings. Upon entering the restaurant, you’ll notice the different variations of “Self Portrait” and “Starry Night.” Local artists, in addition to art students from Auburn University, were responsible for creating these paintings. Van Gough’s “Self Portrait” as an Auburn University football player (pictured below) remains to be the restaurant’s most popular painting, not to mention the quirkiest.
With such a variety of food options on Amsterdam Cafe’s menu, you’re sure to find the perfect meal to satisfy your appetite. From award-winning sandwiches and amazing seafood, to comforting soups and made-from-scratch pastas, the choices are endless. Listed below is just a small sampling of creative dishes that are served at Amsterdam Cafe. One of the most popular times to eat at Amsterdam Cafe is Sunday Brunch, which takes place from 10:00am to 3:00pm. A few of the most-requested dishes served during this time include ‘Chicken & Waffles,’ ‘El Benedict’ and ‘Short Rib Hash.’
In addition to their indoor dining area, Amsterdam Cafe also offers a great outdoor patio for guests to enjoy their meals. Sunday Brunch is a great time to try out their patio area.
