Foodies, unite! Kansas is home to some of the best restaurants in the country, chock-full of both unique fare as well as good, old-fashioned comfort food. However, if you are looking to try something new that is a bit off the beaten path, you will want to visit this Kansas restaurant in the middle of nowhere that’s so worth the journey:
Founded in 1879 and located just south of Emporia, the town of Olpe is a small and proud community of 550 that has some of the friendliest residents in the state. However, what is housed inside of Olpe may just be one of the best-kept secrets in all of Kansas.
Welcome to the Olpe Chicken House; arguably the best place in the state to get fried chicken that gained national recognition from USA Today in 2000, ("50 Great Plates From 50 Great States").
Since it first opened in 1958, the Olpe Chicken House has been renowned for its famous fried chicken dinners...
...chicken strips and chicken fried steak...
...sandwiches...
...and decadent pie.
Before opening as the Chicken House in 1958, the building served as the popular Cooper's Café (which originally opened in 1934).
What many people may not realize is that the Olpe Chicken House is a second-generation restaurant, with the first generation running the seven-seat Cooper's Café.
The next time you travel the Flint Hills, travel off the beaten path to the Olpe Chicken House... you and your stomach can thank us later!
