Webster’s Dictionary defines the word boonies as “a rural area; sticks.” Does this definition remind you of any place in particular? It certainly does for us! When we think of the “boonies,” we can’t help but think of this one Colorado location that is way out of the way for most of us, but so worth the drive:
Located in the very northwest corner of the state, Dinosaur is a small statutory town of 339 that is known to turn heads because of its unusual name.
Interesting fact: The town was called Artesia until 1966, when it was unanimously changed to Dinosaur.
When visiting this prehistorically-named town, you will notice a number of unique distinctions including unusual street names...
...numerous historic sites...
Dinosaur is home to the Upper Wade and Curtis Cabin and Rial Chew Ranch Complex (pictured).
...and even some larger-than-life replicas located throughout a small area.
What is it that we love most about Dinosaur? We love its close proximity to the stunning 210,844-acre Dinosaur National Monument!
Nestled inside of both Colorado and Utah, Dinosaur National Monument is home to a whopping 800 paleontological sites and fossils.
When you visit this national treasure, be sure to take the (rare) opportunity to touch real dinosaur bones...
...explore the ancient Uinta Fremont Indian petroglyphs...
These well preserved petroglyphs are estimated to be 1,000+ years old!
...and gaze over the monument's utterly jaw-dropping and fossil-rich canyons.
