Halloween on its own is a pretty scary holiday. The October chill in the air combined with people wandering up and down the streets in strange costumes creates an eerie phenomenon. And then there are some places in Virginia that will take your Halloween experience to the next level. Whether it’s a haunted house set for Halloween, or a downright haunted house in general, here are some spots that are truly not for the faint of heart come October 31st.
DarkWood Manor is noted among some of the best haunted house attractions in the entire country. Located in downtown Luray, this site truly goes above and beyond in the acting/makeup department. In other words, you might just forget these characters aren't actually ghosts and monsters. The house will be open all weekends in October, and on Halloween night from 7:00 - 10:00.

What makes the Devil's Den such a horrifying Halloween attraction is the fact that it is based on a true story. In 1972, a man's body was found murdered on Route 531 near Winchester and the community was horrified. Today, the brave of heart can enter the killer's home and experience pure psychological terror. Tickets for admission begin at $15.

For eleven years, the Fear Forest in Harrisonburg has been luring in visitors to experience a truly terrifying walk in the woods. In addition to this half-mile walk, other attractions include a haunted hay wagon ride and a zombie laser hunt. Children under the age of 12 are not permitted to enter, and admission begins at $13. The site will open during weekends in October, including the 31st.
Fields of Fear in Centerville has a range of attractions, all varying from somewhat spooky to downright terrifying. Fortunately, if you have kids with you they can enjoy some of the less-terrifying attractions. But for those looking to get spooked this Halloween, the Clowns attraction will be enough to keep you up at night. Over 20 acres of these attractions will open September 23rd and run through Halloween night.

According to the website, in this particular spot "it's not just corn that's harvested."
Haunted Major Graham's Mansion is one of the most highly-rated haunted houses in the state. And it all originates from the fact that the house may be actually haunted. The mansion is named after a Civil War hero, and the building of his estate was completed by the 1850s. The house is said to be haunted by a cast of ghosts, all relatives of Squire Graham. Halloween night, visitors can interact with some ghost impersonators and perhaps even some real ghosts.

What serves as a charming pumpkin patch during most of the season turns into a horrifying haunted attraction at Halloween. Starting the first week of October, visitors will be taken into the woods to be truly terrorized by figures that will jump out of nowhere. There are also hayrides that begin at 7:00 each night the site is open.
Located in Hampton Roads, the Asylum Extreme Haunt is a walk-through attraction where visitors can explore the haunted halls of an asylum. What makes this place especially memorable is the chance to experience what it's like to be a patient under the care of twisted and deranged doctors. Most of the exhibits here are restricted to children under 13 years of age.
Located at the Windy Hill Sports Complex in Midlothian, the Blood Lake Haunted Trail is sure to deliver all the screams you could ever hope for (or dread) on the scariest night of the year. Celebrating its ninth year in season, the site will have three attractions to choose from this year. New this year is the Crypt Escape, where visitors will have to make their way out of a vampire's crypt before he awakens and catches them. Tickets begin at $12.
