Entering This Little Known Florida Castle Will Make You Feel Like You’re In A Fairytale
The Villa Zorayda was built in 1883 by Bostonian millionaire and amateur architect Franklin W. Smith as his winter home in St. Augustine. It was designed to resemble a 12th-century Moorish palace, and it is the first example of the Moorish Revival style used for a residence in Florida. Smith was a pioneer of a poured concrete style later used by Henry M. Flagler for his iconic St. Augustine resorts. In its more than 130 years of existence, the castle has served as everything from a speakeasy to a movie set. Today, it serves as a museum, filled with art and antiques, offering daily tours and self-guided audio tours.
