Lums Pond might be the prettiest lake in all of Delaware.

It's peaceful and quiet, it's got a great rental system for canoes, kayaks, and other watercraft, and there are lots of activities hosted by the park year-round.
But it's got a dark history - one that goes way, way back.

Before the park was an official state park, it was just wild, unprotected land in New Castle County. It has always been a popular spot for fishing and other outdoor recreation.
In the 1870s, a young girl ran away from an unhappy home in New Castle County

She ended up seeking refuge in the woods near what's now the Swamp Trail at Lums Pond State Park.

Unfortunately for the young girl, she was not the only one in the woods.

The helpless runaway stumbled upon a man camping out in the woods, and her newfound sense of freedom quickly turned to dread. The man captured her, raped her, and murdered her when their paths crossed.
This gruesome act took place on the trails that visitors walk to this day.

Authorities found her body shortly after she was murdered, and a massive manhunt to find the killer was launched. Sadly, he was never found - he escaped in the night, and either disappeared forever, or blended in with society again. I'm not such which is a more terrifying thought.
So, as you cross the bridges and walk the trails at this pristine State Park, be aware that it was not always as peaceful as it feels today.

If you catch yourself there on a quiet evening, you might even hear the screams of the runaway girl's ghost, coming from the woods by the Swamp Trail.
And if you find yourself walking along the docks in the middle of winter, you might feel an extra chill.

The young girl's ghost still haunts Lums Pond to this day, trying to find the peace she deserved - and what better place than in the now lovely park where she lost her young life.
