Whether you are looking for beautiful cities, roadside attractions galore, or scenic parks, you are sure to find them (and a whole lot more) here in the lovely Sunflower State. Do you know what else we have? Picture-perfect small towns. If you have been searching high and low for small towns that offer nothing but peace and quiet, you will definitely want to visit:
1. Riverton
Though it may be an unincorporated community with a population of a little less than 1,000, Riverton is a quiet Route 66 town that houses not only adorable shops (such as the Eisler Brothers Country Store, pictured), but other area attractions like the iconic Rainbow Bridge.
2. Alma
If you love sugar as much as I, you are going to love the historic "City of Native Stone Set in the Foothills," which is home to both the historic Alma Bakery & Sweet Shoppe AND decadent Alma Creamery.
3. Oswego
What the town of 1,800 lacks in size, it makes up for with its rich history, impressive arts scene (which can be admired via a series of historic murals scattered throughout the town), and even ample recreation opportunities. (Oswego is home to FIVE well-maintained parks.)
4. Halstead
Named for a Civil War journalist and esteemed correspondent, Halstead is a small town with a big heart that packs a major punch in terms of both history and community pride.
5. Wilson
The "Czech Capital of Kansas" first welcomed Czechoslovakian immigrants via the railroad in the mid-1870s and still welcomes visitors from both near and far for their annual (and very colorful) After Harvest Czech Festival, which takes place the last Saturday of each July.
6. Goessel
Located just north of Wichita, Goessel is a small town with a rich Mennonite history that houses a number of fascinating attractions including the Mennonite Heritage and Agricultural Museum and unique Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church.
7. Piqua
Fans of cinematic history, rejoice! This small town of just over 100 is not only the birthplace of comedy legend Buster Keaton, but it's also the location of the small, yet worthwhile Buster Keaton Museum.
8. Scandia
Another settlement for early European immigrants is the north central town of Scandia, which features a picturesque main street, popular antique mall (pictured), and annual Riverfest (complete with beer garden, Dala Horse race, and even a parade).
9. Athol
If you crave a home where the buffalo roam and the deer and the antelope play, you will love Athol's Home on the Range Cabin, where the iconic poem was penned in the early 1870s.
10. Ellis
We can't decide what we love most about Ellis: The decadent pies at Arthur's Pizza, the fascinating Ellis Railroad Museum, or the numerous festivals and town events. Which is your favorite?
11. Damar
It's no secret that Kansas is home to some of the most beautiful churches in the country... but one of the most beautiful and memorable of them all may just be that of Damar's St. Joseph Catholic Church (pictured).
