Plans Are Underway For The First Buc-ee's In Ohio And We Couldn't Be More Excited

I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
I'm a writer and editor at OnlyInYourState, and a contributing writer at Cincinnati Magazine. I love the Great Outdoors and am endlessly awestruck by this beautiful country of ours. Coffee keeps me going, yoga keeps me sane, my kids keep me grounded, and my writing keeps me inspired.
I’m proudly Midwestern and really, truly believe #MidwestIsBest. Especially here in Ohio, where we have four seasons, a friendly sensibility, the Great Lakes and Appalachian Mountains, three major cities and lots of mid-sized gems and small-town treasures… I could go on. And on. One thing that’s been conspicuously absent from the Buckeye State, however, is Buc-ee’s, a not-so-little gas station-meets-convenience-store with a cult following.
This mega-mart got its start in Texas (where everything’s bigger, of course!) and began expanding outside of the Lone Star State in 2018 with its Baldwin County, Alabama, store. Since then, Buc-ee’s has opened locations in Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina, Colorado, and Missouri, with Tennessee holding the title as the biggest Buc-ee’s in the world. Fans love these stores for their convenience, cleanliness, and unique offerings, and happily, Ohioans will soon be able to join the club as plans are in the final stages for the first Buc-ee’s in Ohio.
At first glance, this might look like your ordinary roadside gas station; the kind of place you stop to fill up your tank and perhaps grab a coffee, bag of chips, or, if you're feeling brave, a hot dog from one of those ubiquitous rolling machines.
However, this isn't your ordinary gas station -- far from it! This, friends, is Buc-ee's, a gas-station-meets-convenience-store that turns a simple fuel up into a bona fide experience.
Step inside and you'll immediately see why Buc-ee's has garnered a cult following; these massive marts are more super store than Kwik-E-Mart; the kind of place where you can find everything from car snacks like beef jerky and BBQ chips...
Oh, and the bathrooms at this "gas station?" Buc-ee's is celebrated as having the cleanest bathrooms around! What a refreshing change of pace from the typical gas station facilities.
Buc-ee's is coming to the Buckeye State! The very first Buc-ee's in the state of Ohio is coming to Huber Heights, a delightful suburb just north of Dayton.
The first Ohio Buc-ee's is planned for the intersection of 235 and 70 in the northeast corner. As of May 2024, Huber Heights city officials had voted unanimously to approve the final plans for the 27,000-square-foot store, catapulting the project "full steam ahead" to its next steps.
In preparation for the influx of visitors to this roadside attraction, more lanes are going to be built to better handle the traffic and lessen the confusion in and out of the gas station and store parking lot.
Something I love about Buc-ee's is that, even though it's a chain, each store feels true to the state in which it's located. The Sevierville Buc-ee's, for example, boasts all kinds of UT gear, while the Kentucky location in Richmond has bourbon-themed wares and gifts. Hopefully the Ohio Buc-ee's will have lots of OSU gear and perhaps some freshly made buckeyes?
Are you excited for the first Buc-ee’s to open in Ohio? No matter where in Ohio you hail from, a road trip to the Huber Heights Buc-ee’s will most certainly be in order once it opens.
