The first sign of spring, at least for me, is spotting that first dandelion, its bright yellow adding a pop of color to the yard. That’s when I know those beautiful breezy days of spring are on their way, and that means spending as much time as I can outdoors. One of the best ways to soak up those sweet spring days is on a hike, like this wildflower trail in Middletown, Rhode Island. It’s short, sweet, and perfect for a lovely spring day.
You probably won't find a more relaxing way to spend an hour or two - and you won't need much more if you are short on time - than at Spruce Acres Farm in Middletown.
A former Christmas tree farm, Spruce Acres Farm spans just over 22 acres and has been transformed into a tranquil conservation area owned by the Aquidneck Land Trust.
The 1.1-mile Spruce Acres Trail, considered easy, usually takes less than half an hour to complete, although you might want to take it slowly to snap photos and to stop and smell the wildflowers.
Meander along the predominately flat trail, which makes it ideal for kiddos, that's brimming with wildflowers. Stop to smell the flowers as you go, but remember to leave them where you find them.
You might want to wear tick repellent. After you hike, check both yourself and your pup, if you've brought him, for ticks.
While the trail is perfect if you don't have much time, you'll find the conservation area has plenty of opportunities to relax. Sit on one of the benches and admire the landscape.
