If you drive through any portion of wild, wonderful West Virginia with any regularity, chances are that you, like me, have a handful (likely a large handful!) of places that you just can’t pass by without at least a quick stop to check the view. One of my personal favorites is universally recognized as one of the best places to pull over in the New River Gorge area: Hawks Nest State Park Overlook. This stunning roadside stop is quick and convenient, it comes complete with a bathroom if needed, and just so happens to offer one of the best views in the New River Gorge region. For all these reasons, I can’t drive past Hawks Nest State Park Overlook without stopping to soak in the beautiful mountain views it offers.
Located in the heart of West Virginia along the Midland Trail (Highway 60) between Ansted and Chimney Corner, Hawks Nest State Park Overlook is a hidden gem that showcases the state's breathtaking beauty.
Perched high above the New River Gorge, this picturesque spot offers visitors an unforgettable experience with stunning panoramic views, lush landscapes, and a rich history.
As you make your way to the overlook, you'll be greeted by a winding road that leads to the summit. The journey itself is an adventure, surrounded by dense forests and scenic trails.
Once you reach the Hawks Nest State Park Overlook (note that it's a separate parking area from Hawks Nest State Park proper, which is located a few curves down the road), prepare to be amazed. To one side of the road, you'll find bathrooms and a small gift shop open seasonally. To the other, take the short trail to a majestic stone overlook with a breathtaking view.
I find the sight simply awe-inspiring, with rugged cliffs, verdant valleys, and the glistening waters of the New River winding its way through the landscape.
This majestic view is particularly breathtaking during autumn, when the foliage transforms into a vibrant mosaic of oranges, yellows, and reds. Capture the moment on your camera or simply take a deep breath and let the beauty of nature fill your senses.
I especially love the view in the springtime as well, when the trees are in bloom or leafed out in a shiny new green. No matter the season, it's the perfect spot to escape the chaos of everyday life and find solace in the tranquility of the great outdoors, even if all you have to spare is five minutes.
Aside from its natural wonders, Hawks Nest State Park Overlook is also steeped in history. If you have time to spare, read up on all that's happened here, thanks to various signs scattered throughout the overlook.
You'll learn, like I did, that during the early 20th century, the area was the epicenter of a significant industrial project, the construction of the Hawks Nest Tunnel. This ambitious endeavor aimed to divert water from the New River to generate hydroelectric power for chemical plants. However, the construction of the tunnel came at a great cost. Due to inadequate safety precautions, thousands of workers were exposed to harmful silica dust, resulting in a significant number of deaths due to silicosis. The Hawks Nest Tunnel Disaster is considered a national tragedy.
