Katie Lawrence is a Southeast Texas native who graduated 18th in her high school class with a GPA of 4.25. She attended college in the Houston area and began writing for OnlyInYourState in 2015.
Today, Katie writes, edits, and performs several other tasks for OnlyInYourState and has never been more passionate about a job before. Outside of work, you can likely find her curled up on with a hot cup of coffee, practicing yoga, baking, or exploring the beautiful Lone Star State (in particular, the vast and mystical West Texas desert).
Did you know there are underground restaurants in Texas? From Dakota’s Steakhouse to the Rathskeller, the Lone Star State has more subterranean dining options than most people realize. Another great spot is Flip ‘n Patties, a Filipino restaurant located in Houston’s vast underground tunnel system. This unique restaurant fuses traditional Filipino cuisine with new-school flavors (just wait until you see the epic burger toppings!), and each bite will send your taste buds further into a state of pure bliss.
If you want more Texas restaurants, make sure to sign up for our weekly dining newsletter. Every Thursday, a new eatery to try in the Lone Star State will be delivered straight to your email. Yum!
Downtown Houston's underground tunnel system is the largest in North America, spanning nearly 100 city blocks.
I definitely recommend going with the halo-halo, which is a traditional Filipino dessert made from crushed ice, evaporated or coconut milk, and various toppings/sides such as fruit preserves, sweetened kidney or garbanzo beans, and flan. It's topped with a scoop of ube ice cream and is guaranteed to make your taste buds sing. The ice cream burger is a close second in my book.
Flip ‘n Patties also has a surface-level restaurant on Eldridge Parkway. You can also place an online order via Grubhub. Visit the Flip ‘n Patties website or the Flip ‘n Patties Facebook page for more information.
