Located in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula is one of our favorite destinations — Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This incredible area is known for its massive dunes and countless recreational opportunities. While there is so much to do here, we suggest lacing up those hiking boots and tackling the beautiful Cottonwood Trail. This is a fabulous way to explore the area, capture gorgeous views, and even receive a little fresh air. This may just be one of the coolest outdoor adventures you’ll take in Michigan.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is home to several hiking trails. Although, for one that won’t take up too much time of your day but still provides an incredible experience, the Cottonwood Trail must be at the top of your list.
This is a 1.4-mile loop trail that isn’t too difficult. However, you’ll certainly want proper footwear as you’ll be trekking across rolling dunes, making the journey just a little more challenging.
At the trailhead, you’ll find a self-guided brochure that will describe some of the things you will see on your journey, as well as the geology of the dunes. This hike is scenic and educational — it’s the best of both worlds.
While walking in the sand may be tiring and a bit challenging, every step will be worth it as you explore the Cottonwood Trail in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It’s one way to enjoy much of what this area has to offer.
