There are so many small towns in Kentucky that overflow with Southern charm. It’s always a joy to drive through them, stop at quaint shops and delicious restaurants, and see old buildings that sometimes make us feel like we’ve gone back in time. The peace and quiet afforded by such places is a nice respite from the city. One lovely small town that shouldn’t be missed is Midway, the most peaceful place to live in Kentucky.
Midway is a quiet, tiny town of less than 2,000 people that lies 14 miles northwest of Lexington. It was once inhabited by Native American mound-building people, and several burial mounds have been found on farms in the area.
Established in 1835, Midway has a rich history of bourbon distilling and some of the old buildings still stand. Nearly 100 years of distilling occurred here between 1865 and 1959. This particular corner saw at least nine different distilling companies over the years.
While the peaceful town is quite small, it still boasts its own Midway University with a gorgeous campus that was originally founded in 1847 as the Kentucky Female Orphan School.
Even the busiest part of town is quite relaxed and uncrowded with old-fashioned soda fountains next to chic modern boutiques and tasty restaurants with varying types of cuisine.
Speaking of restaurants, The Brown Barrel & Blind Harry’s is a mainstay in Midway. The scrumptious menu is just as varied as its selection of Kentucky bourbons.
The Blind Harry’s portion of the business was named after Midway local Harry Clay Anderson, a man who built two houses that still stand, one with no assistance, and he was blind!
Midway is well worth at least a day trip, but why not spend a weekend and stay in beautiful accommodations like the Holly Hill Inn? The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and was built in the 1800s. Since 1979, it’s been a charming, comfortable place to stay.
