There’s a unique attraction in far Northern Wisconsin that’s free – and if you visit, you may want to bring a jug along with you! The Maslowski Beach Artesian Well is a little attraction in Ashland that has a big following. Here’s why the Maslowski Beach Artesian Well is a Wisconsin wonder that you need to visit.
Ashland is a vibrant and picturesque town that’s located on the southern shore of Lake Superior. It’s a great basecamp for enjoying outdoor spots like the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and the Apostle Islands. But there’s also beauty to be found right in town.
Right off the highway, on the western limits of the town, Maslowski Beach offers beautiful views of Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes. Visitors can enjoy the sandy shoreline and take in the picturesque expanse of the lake.
While Lake Superior can be a little cold during much of the year, the beach is a good place for wading. It stretches over 1,400 feet, and the water is shallow for a distance offshore. Just be careful of the rocks!
There’s much more to this little park than a nice beach. You may see some cars lining up by a decorative little hut in the parking lot. You might want to get in line.
The hut is actually an elaborately-tiled well house, where you’ll find an artesian well. It’s a type of well that that is under natural pressure from its aquifer, so no additional pumping is necessary.
The water flows day after day, all year long. You’re free to fill up a jug to take some away. If you think it tastes better than the water from your sink, you might not be mistaken.
Maslowski Beach is a nice little spot on U.S. Highway 2; there are bathrooms and changing rooms, and it’s connected to a bike path that takes you right through town. There’s also a picnic area, so even if you’re just passing through, you should plan a little visit. That’s what I did recently: I enjoyed a run on the trail and finished with some delicious water. I’ll be back for a longer visit! Make your travel plans on Booking.com, and here are some of the best attractions in Wisconsin.
