Wisconsin’s small towns are treasures and thankfully, some are just as charming as they were generations ago. The little town of Brodhead is a southern Wisconsin destination that’s worth seeking out. With a rich history, a well-preserved downtown, and a scenic backdrop, Brodhead is an inviting destination for those seeking a genuine taste of Wisconsin’s heritage. Brodhead, a town of 3,200, is located in Green and Rock counties. It has a long history.
Just south of town is a historic marker for the Half-Way Tree, an old tree that supposedly identified for Native Americans the halfway point on a foot trail between the Mississippi River and Lake Michigan.
The town received its name as a tribute to Edward Hallock Brodhead (1809-1890), the chief engineer of the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad. He played a pivotal role as one of the earliest advocates for the establishment of the railway depot here.
One of Brodhead's notable landmarks is its Covered Bridge. This wooden covered bridge spans Norwegian Creek and is a picturesque reminder of the city's past.
While it may not be as well-known for cheese production as some other places in Wisconsin, the community is strongly connected to the state's agricultural heritage.
Brodhead hosts various community events throughout the year, celebrating its heritage and providing entertainment for residents and visitors alike.
Every June, Brodhead hosts Family Fest, an old-fashioned festival in Putnam Park. It also knows how to celebrate the holidays!
Brodhead has a lot of historic charm. Its downtown area includes many carefully maintained buildings that showcase the architectural styles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
For example, it has several city parks where residents and visitors can enjoy green spaces, sports facilities, and playgrounds. These parks offer recreational opportunities for people of all ages.
I first visited Brodhead as a college student – I biked through when I was exploring the Sugar River State Trail. I had a lot of fun rediscovering it with my wife last year.
