One of my favorite things about writing for OnlyInYourState is that I am constantly discovering new spots and uncovering hidden gems throughout Massachusetts. Among my favorite places to write about are the unusual and lesser-known structures and monuments that seem to be scattered across the state. We have already told you about the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown and the historic Dutch House in Brookline. Bancroft Tower in Worcester is another spectacular spot worth visiting.

When you first lay eyes on Bancroft Tower, you may feel like you are stepping into a fairy tale. This magnificent 56-foot-high structure dates back to 1900.

The tower, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located on the top of Prospect Hill in Worcester’s Salisbury Park.
This intricate granite and stone structure was built by a local, Stephen Salisbury III, in honor of a family friend named George Bancroft. Bancroft was born in Worcester and was the former Secretary of the Navy as well as a writer and politician.

Bancroft Tower can be found at the top of Prospect Hill. Although it is a relatively short walk, it can be a bit of an uphill climb. Be sure to wear sneakers or boots.
