I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
In a state as picturesque as New Mexico (it is the “Land of Enchantment,” after all!), there are countless scenic drives we can take. Among the best-known scenic drives in the state are Route 66, the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway, and the High Road to Taos. However, there’s one under-the-radar scenic drive in New Mexico you probably haven’t tried yet. Taking you through tiny communities and the grasslands, La Frontera Del Llano Scenic Byway is absolutely beautiful.
You can begin your drive along La Frontera del Llano Scenic Byway in the community of Abbott. This route follows Hwy 39 south to Logan, NM where you'll find Ute Lake State Park.
Located within the Cibola National Forest, Mills Canyon Campground is on this scenic route. If you need a place to spend the night, this remote campground has 12 campsites available and it's open year-round.

Another notable site on this scenic drive is Mosquero Mesa. Hwy 39 climbs to the top of the mesa where you can take in panoramic views of the wide open landscape that surrounds it.
After approximately 94 miles, La Frontera del Llano Scenic Byway (Hwy 39) ends in Logan, a town that's best known as the home of Ute Lake State Park. This beautiful state park is home to an 8,200-acre reservoir along the Canadian River and also offers camping. If you want to explore this park for a while, consider spending the night!
