Werner Peak Lookout sits at the top of the Whitefish Mountain Range with an elevation of 6,960 feet. And on select dates from July 1 to October 1, you can stay there for $50 a night.

Werner Peak Lookout, which is located about 23 miles north of Whitefish, boasts 360 degree views of the Whitefish Mountain Range, Glacier National Park and the Flathead Valley. You’ll probably spend a good portion of your stay looking out the windows or enjoying time on the deck.

Inside you’ll find a propane cook stove, lights, a refrigerator, dishes, pots and pans, cleaning supplies, two single beds and two cots (it will sleep four comfortably). The lookout is also stocked with blankets and games. There’s an outhouse, but you’ll have to provide your own drinking water since none is available onsite.

Well-behaved pets are allowed to stay in the lookout with you, but you’ll have to wait until your kids are 10 or older to bring them due to the steep terrain.

The historic and beautiful Ralph Thayer Memorial Trail runs adjacent to the lookout, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to stretch your legs and see even more breathtaking views. This trail is part of a group of trails that extends from Werner Peak to Diamond Peak and Red Meadow Lake.

Needless to say, this is a very popular place to stay. Visitors can start reserving their dates for the coming season on January 4. Call the MT DNRC Stillwater State Forest at 406-881-2371 from Monday-Friday to save your dates.

And if the Werner Peak Lookout is all booked up for the season, you can always book next year and stay in one of these unique places instead.
