I'm proud to be from the great state of Michigan. I've lived in the Mitten several different times throughout my life spending time in all corners of it. My journeys took me up and down the Lake Michigan coast, out east to explore Detroit and Ann Arbor, and to the dense forests of the UP.
Before writing with Only In Your State, I worked as a local TV news reporter and anchor, most recently in South Bend. Many of the stories I covered took place in Southwest Michigan. My roots are even deeper in the Wolverine State as I often head to Kalamazoo to visit family.
When I'm not out exploring nature, I'm avidly watching sports. I specifically have a deep love for the Michigan Wolverines (my alma mater), and I get to write about them and several other Big Ten teams as and editor for Athlon Sports. I also love to enjoy the great outdoors with my wife and our dog, Piper.
I'm excited to share all my favorite Michigan destinations with you. Keep exploring.
The city of Grand Rapids, Michigan is making its list and checking it twice so visitors have a wonderful place to celebrate Christmas. Starting on November 17th, the Downtown Market will be transformed into a winter wonderland that will remind you of the holiday season in a quaint European village. This is the first year they’ve ever hosted the new Christkindl Markt and they’re making sure it’s not the last with more than 30 vendors, live entertainment, unique holiday crafts, and even curling lessons. Here are some of the fun experiences you can expect if you plan on heading there.

These cups of cocoa come in traditional German stein glasses for an even more traditional feel. Pile it high with whipped cream and you have a delicious treat to sip as you take a peek at the other vendors around the market.
It’s not only food here, as you’ll run into several craft vendors.

This is a great place to sit down and enjoy a traditional German sausage right off the grill or a cup of mulled wine called Glühwein.
They’ve booked their spot for the inaugural Christkindl Markt to show off products from more than 100 workshops around Mexico. This shop brings the spirit of Christmas from Mexico to their store just outside Grand Rapids.
Warm up with a mini donut from Olly’s Donuts food truck.
These go great with a hot chocolate or a warm apple cider. That’s definitely something I’m personally looking forward to.
If you’re looking for a new way to get into the Christmas spirit in Grand Rapids, you won’t find a fresher idea than the new Christkindl Markt. There’s no cost to attend, but keep in mind that it is outdoors so dress accordingly. I often find exactly what I need at L.L. Bean to enjoy the winter weather.
The market runs from November 17-December 23. You can find more information on what you can expect by heading to their website and Facebook page.
