Hey! I'm a freelance writer and guidebook author. I've authored "New Hampshire's 52 With A View - A Hiker's Guide", serve as editor of Appalachian Mountain Club's "Southern New Hampshire Trail Guide", and and am co-editor of the "White Mountain Guide", also for AMC. I'm currently beginning work on the 6th Edition of AMC's Southern New Hampshire Trail Guide, which will be published in 2025. I live in southern New Hampshire and can usually be found wandering throughout the state's mountains and forests.
I’m not a crowds person. Especially if I’m trying to find a place to wind down and relax from the overload of daily life. I guess that’s why I head into the woods so often! While much of southern New Hampshire is heavily populated, the further north you go, the fewer people you will encounter. You can’t travel further north than the town of Pittsburg, the last stop before hitting Canada. It could probably called the most remote town in the state and it makes for a perfect remote New Hampshire getaway.
Pittsburg is the northernmost town in the state, and also its largest town by area. As such, its population is spread out, providing for solitude away from busy life.
If you're a hiker, you will appreciate the experience here, which is far less busy than the White Mountains. A favorite spot of mine is Falls In The River along the Cohos Trail.
Magalloway Mountain is probably the most prominent mountain in the Pittsburg area. It is reached by a somewhat rough eight-mile drive from U.S. Route 3.
The northernmost stretch of U.S. Route 3 through Pittsburg is nicknamed Moose Alley - and for good reason. You'll have a very good chance of spotting one of these majestic animals.
In winter, Pittsburg becomes snowmobile country. A vast array of snowmobile routes span the town and also connect to neighboring Quebec. Bear Rock Adventures offers rentals if you don't have your own snowmobile.
It’s a bit of a drive to get up to this remote New Hampshire getaway so make sure you have everything you need for a comfortable ride. Don’t forget to make a few stops along the way, like Beaver Brook Falls in Colebrook.
