If you’ve always been a fan of the smoky beverage, or you’re just fascinated by Kentucky’s heritage, then you’re the perfect guest for this bourbon-themed retreat. Located in an old distillery building that’s over 150 years old, this unique Kentucky Airbnb in pastoral Stamping Ground is the ideal launch pad for adventures in nearby Frankfort and Lexington.
With a population of under 800 people, Stamping Ground is a stunning community known for its picturesque ranches, serene rivers, and friendly residents. The town's original inhabitants called it Stamping Grounds after the enormous herds of bison that routinely migrated through the area in the early 1800s. Legend also has it that this is where Baptist minister Rev. Elijah Craig distilled the first barrel of America's Native Spirit in 1789.
It's no surprise, then, that in 1868, a handful of businesspeople founded Stamping Ground's very own Buffalo Springs Distilling Company. The building currently open for guests once acted as the distillery's office and gatehouse.
After the company closed its doors in the 1970s, the complex's buildings and warehouses gradually fell into disrepair. This unique accommodation is one of the distillery's last remaining buildings, representing a significant chapter in local history.
Today, owner Kayla Jones is passionate about connecting visitors to this unique aspect of Bluegrass State culture. While the building may be well over 150 years old, she's ensured that it contains all the creature comforts necessary for a relaxing vacation.
Some quirky details are a wink and nod to the structure's past. The sink, for instance, is fitted with industrial finishes. Combined with the warm wood, soft towels, and cozy textiles, these metal accents create an ambiance of unpretentious hominess.
For any getaway, the bed sets the standard of relaxation. Look forward to flopping on this rustic accommodation's queen-sized memory foam mattress! For additional guests, Jones will supply an inflatable, queen-sized bed.
