If you love hiking in Texas and you haven’t yet checked out the Boquillas Canyon Trail in Big Bend National Park, just what are you waiting for? The lesser-known cousin of the world-famous Santa Elena Canyon, this secluded hike is easy, not crowded, and absolutely gorgeous.
At just over a mile long (round-trip), the Boquillas Canyon Trail is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated hikes within Big Bend National Park. It's rated as easy and has an elevation gain of just over 200 feet, yet it still manages to showcase some of the most stunning views you'll ever see.
The trailhead is located in a parking area at the end of the Boquillas Canyon spur road. From there, you'll climb a small hill from the top of which you can marvel at the Rio Grande, whose powerful waters are responsible for carving many of the park's signature rock formations.
After stopping to admire the river for a brief spell (or as long as you'd like!), the trail begins its descent towards the water. Whether the river is sparkling blue or a tad muddy, just being so close to such a mighty force is an indescribable feeling.
My favorite thing about this particular trail is the huge canyon walls that tower on either side of the river. The view is almost an exact replica of Santa Elena Canyon - only with a fraction of the crowds.
Another thing I love about the Boquillas Canyon Trail is how the lush greenery stands in stark contrast to the rugged desert terrain. It's the best of both worlds!
