There’s a gorgeous nature trail that will take you into one of the most beautiful corners of the Northwoods. The Willow Flowage Nature Trail is a path that travels through stands of towering pines before reaching an area that has been compared to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. You’ll find the Willow Flowage in northwestern Oneida County. It covers about 6,400 acres and is surrounded by forests and wetlands.

The Willow Flowage was created as a result of damming the Tomahawk River in the mid-1940s to regulate water flow downstream.

The primary purpose of the reservoir was flood control, but it has also become a significant area for outdoor recreation and conservation.
The flowage is popular with boaters, anglers and paddlers – it has campsites you can only reach by water.

They offer a chance to trully get away from it all. But you don’t need a paddle and lifejacket to experience the fruits of this place.

Just take a stroll down the Willow Flowage Nature Trail. The gateway to the path is a small parking area and a simple trailhead.

The trail passes a red pine plantation that’s filled with trees planted in the 1930s - they are huge!

There are some walk-in campsites off the trail; and eventually, the trail heads past a beach that’s littered with bleached driftwood. Water levels fluctuate – when I hiked the path, the water levels were very low. No swimming was happening at this beach!
